There were heartwarming scenes in the clash between Essendon and Melbourne on Friday night when rookie Tex Wanganeen kicked the first goal of his AFL career. The “Baby Bombers” rallied to defeat Melbourne after trailing by 28 points at half time. It was also the first goal kicked by a Wanganeen since early 1879, when Tex Wanganeen’s great grandfather Mark made one in the Victorian Football Association(now the Aussie Rules).

Their dad is a legend, but what will the new generation do?
Tex Wanganeen gave his dad and Essendon fans ample to smile about when he slipped Dees opponent Joel Smith, crumbed a loose ball inside 50 and snapped his maiden major using his left boot.
The youngest Wanganeen showed all the poise of his father and Port Adelaide premiership teammate Byron Pickett in scoring the first of two goals on debut against Melbourne.

Cameras immediately panned to Gavin, who leapt up from his seat and celebrated his son’s goal with those sitting next to him. The best part of that was the old man celebrating with friends and family. They got that excited.
Those scenes of Gavin Wanganeen are exactly why the father-son rule should be treasured in the game #AFLDeesDons
