DEL - Deutsche Eishockey Liga
The Deutsche Eishockey Liga or DEL, for short (German pronunciation: [deːl]), is a German professional ice hockey league that was founded in 1994. It was formed as a replacement for the Ice hockey Bundesliga and became the new top-tier league in Germany as a result.
The DEL is not directly overseen by the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) which is the governing body of ice hockey in Germany, but is part of the federation members. The DEL currently has 14 member teams, with an additional eight teams competing in the second level Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL2). In the DEL, each team plays a total of 52 games during the regular season: 36 games against other teams in its conference and 16 against teams from the opposite conference. At the end of each season, four teams are relegated to DEL2 and replaced by four clubs promoted from there. The German Cup competition is held annually by the DEB and consists of DEL and 2nd Bundesliga teams: it is considered second only to league competition within Germany.
